10 Winter Coats for 2015

I admit it. I live in Florida and there is no need for me to stock up on winter jackets, boots, and all those warm and cozy accessories you lucky northerners get to have. But here’s the thing… my handsome fella and I are heading out on a road trip in February and I want warm, trendy, and perfect to be the three essentials my wardrobe has.

I’ve poured through countless sites to find what’s in, what I genuinely would wear and came up with an idea. Why not share with all you babely ladies what coats and jackets are considered to be “it” this year! So I’ve compiled a list of 10 great choices in various colors, fabrics and styles, all under $200. That’s right, winter wear that will last you from now until spring and well into the next few winters.

HelloFresh + Our First Box

Let me tell you, I was so nervous to get our first Hello Fresh box. It sounded way too easy and hell, just too much of a great idea. But we got our first box yesterday and I couldn’t be happier. So let me tell you about my new best friend…

For those of you who have never heard of it, Hello Fresh is an amazing company that wanted to bring the deliciousness of gourmet meals to your doorstep, with the ease of a few button clicks. Choosing from two different types of boxes, for the herbivores or omnivores, you can then choose how many folks you’ll be feeding. You then get to scroll through the mouth watering menu options to choose what will be in your box on your next week’s delivery. Every item, from cloves of garlic and spices to meats and veggies are measured out and come with an easy to follow recipe card for meals you generally wouldn’t attempt on your own. For this week’s delivery, we received three options – Panko Crusted Trout with Lemon Butter Sauce, Parsnip Mash + Broccoli, Homestyle Chicken Fried Steak with Mashed Potatoes + Peas, and Crispy Chicken Biryani with Spiced Basmati Rice, Golden Raisins + Peas.

Each meal is separated into it’s own box and delivered with ice packs to spare! The ice was still frozen as we unpacked it and our meats were frigid and fresh. Every item was in great condition, no bruising or rotten produce, and the meats and seafood were tightly packed to ensure no openings or leakage.

If you’re still not totally convinced, here’s a couple fun things to think about…

If you need to pause your orders (be it vacation or you just don’t have the funds), do so the Wednesday before your next delivery and you won’t need to worry about being home to receive it or paying for a box you can’t/won’t use.

Take advantage of this offer – $40 off your first box! Try it out, see if it works for you, and save money – what could be better? Click here to take advantage of this deal. Through the site, you save $20 on your first box, but through this link you save $40!

Be adventurous, try this out! It’s a great, easy way to jazz up your eats and a simple way to make date night even more amazing. Check back for how we made our meals and just how tasty they are!

Halloween Must-Haves: Cats + Bats

September is totally, one hundred precent, a perfectly acceptable time to start getting ready for Halloween. Some of us may be a little more into the spooky holiday than others, and ya know what? That’s ok.

Since I was a tiny human, I’ve always loved Halloween. The dressing up, the decorations, the smells in the air. Come on – it’s free candy and pumpkin pie time. Even down here in Florida we get the hint of fall in the sea breeze and a taste of the ever delicious candy apples from the Oktoberfest and Fall Fairs around the area.

I started thinking early this year, with so much inspiration from small shops I get to keep in touch with to amazing accessories from companies who specialize in keeping imagination and play in their products. This is the first of few jam packed lists to help you get you and your family in the Halloween spirit with items and apparel that can be used year round. Just because I can, I’m starting with some rad cat and bat themed goodies you’ll want to hang onto. And don’t you fret, I’ve included links to where you can get each item, because I love you.

Ninj + Ninj, Planner Perfection

Back to school. Play dates. Mom stuff. My days are filled with a beautiful array of organized chaos which carries me through the week. I love it, but I admit, I remember about 12% of what is going on each day. I loved middle and high school’s tiny planners for remembering just what needed to get done and go do.

As I reached the point of needing to keep track of not only my life and schedule, but three kids and one handsome fella, my tiny little pocket planner no longer sufficed. In comes Ninj&Ninj. My lady knights in shining paper armor. Two awesome ladies based in Michigan, Niki and Jenna started making wonderful paper goods for folks. Not only do they specialize in planners, but in cards, prints, invites, and notebooks.

When my planner arrived in the mail, I rushed inside to rip the package open. It was even better than I imagined… protective cover on the outside, stickers to brighten each page, the cutest magnetic bookmark, and my favorite feature – starting in August. Academic calendars have always been my jam. I find I rarely keep track of things when I try to get in the habit come January (so much for New Year’s resolutions). Starting in August kick starts a whole new wave of organization, and with this pretty paper babe by my side, I’m ready to take on everything.

For your very own planner, be it academic, wedding, a new notebook… check out Ninj&Ninj here!

Wild Sunshine Threads: Brands We Love

It’s been ages since I’ve had Ronin be my model for a post, but a great mood and sunshine after a storm seemed to be the perfect formula. When he was little, bibdanas saved us on numerous occasions from spit, food, and whatever else seemed to dribble down his sweet chin. These days, we love to use them as not only bibs, but as additions to outfits too!

Through the wonderful world of social media, we happened upon the lovely shop, Wild Sunshine Threads. This sweet company, headed by one heck of a maker mama, Emily, makes not only amazing quality bibdanas, but turbans, slouchy hats, and mommy + me sets. Emily takes the time and care needed to create great pieces that work with your little ones and offers them for a great price. Believe me, we’ve spent an arm and a leg on baby accessories, but it’s always the brands with the best customer service we stick with. Wild Sunshine Thread has not only shown great love in their quality, but also customer satisfaction as well.

One of the few that Ronin will keep on all day, this particular bibdana features a soft grey flannel for its backing, keeping his little neck comfy and clean. The print itself is beyond beautiful… I love anything geometric, triangles most of all! The colors are neutral and work with so many outfits, it’s hard to not want to have him wear it everyday!

Project Capsule Wardrobe: Shoes

This is by far my hardest capsulation… shoes.

How do you pair down to the essentials? Well, I let myself stray a bit from my usual strict numbers that reign supreme in my closet. Shoes are a different beast, a totally unusual specimen. They can make or break an outfit, be solely for winter or summer, rain or shine. So why be so hard on myself? Why take away from something I love so much, something I truly take joy out of?

Remember, capsule wardrobes can be done for every season or the whole year. Shoes are no different. Rain/snow boots, flip-flops, sneakers, high heels, all have a time and a place to be worn. Don’t beat yourself up if you end up keeping a few extra pairs that you know may come in handy or have in the past. My Hunter and Minnetonka boots for instance, are for absolutely different uses, just as my Merrell and Converse sneakers are. I wear them all for various reasons and none stay dormant in the depths of my closet for more than a few months.

So here’s my suggestion for all you shoe lovin’ gals like me. If you wear ’em, keep ’em.  If you’ve been hoarding them since high school or the soles are stapled helplessly back on, it’s time to say goodbye. I’ve created a simple checklist for must-have categories with a few extra spaces for you to decide what to keep.

The Sneakers:

1-2 Pairs of Casual

The Beat Up Pair

The Boots:

Rain Boots

1-2 Pairs of Ankle Boots

Snow Boots (if applicable)

The Fancies:

High Heels

The Sandals:

Flip Flops

Remember, these are simply suggestions. Take or leave what YOU prefer. I have a thing for sneakers and Toms, and my wardrobe reflects just that. Going into fall, I really suggest having a great pair of boots, a kick ass pair of clogs, and a wonderful pair of sneaks. For a brief rundown of what I like to keep on hand, look below! I’ve included links to where you can purchase some of them as well.

Don’t judge, I know I have a few too many, but let’s be honest here.

I’m a woman and I love shoes. A lot.

What’s in My Closet?

The Sneakers: Black All-Star Lean Converse, White Keens MaderasBlack Authentic Vans, Blue Lo-Pro Vans, Merrells, Red Canvas TOMS.

The Boots: Minnetonka Tramper Boots (Brown), Minnetonka Fringe Boots (Black), Black Gloss Hunter Boots, Brown Ankle Boots

The Fancies: Lotta from Stockholm Nubuck Clogs, BCBG Peep Toe Pumps, Mossimo Peep Toe Mules, Mossimo Beige High Heeled Booties, Mossimo Black/Brown Flats, Mustache Loafers

The Sandals: F21 Black Sandals, Rainbow Flip-Flops, Reef Flip-Flops

So I’m not the worst… but I’ll admit, I’d love to have a walk-in closet with so many shoes that I could wear a different pair every day for a year. But alas, that’s for my crazy heart, not based in practicality at all. So I’ll stick with my almost 20 pairs of shoes and call it a day. Happy purging!!

A Touch of Sage: A New Kindred Wrap

With the end of the summer coming to a close, back to school looming on the horizon, and a toddler who sees adventure in every sidewalk crack, it’s nice to take a minute to soak in the simple beauty around. I’ve taken my time the past few days, slowed my pace to savor the sun filled moments that our Florida family basks in. While I’m sad to see the summer go, fall is my absolute favorite – the colors, the clothing, the endless new explorations that become fond memories.

For those of you who have followed along with my, you know I’m an avid believer in minimalism when it comes to my wardrobe. Everything I own is in a very specific color palette, style, and has an air of simplicity to each piece. Being a mother, I truly relish in maternal accessories that not only serve a great function but are of the highest quality and style. Last month I had the pleasure of introducing many of you to Kindred Wrap, a wonderful woven wrap company that truly shows artistry in each wrap produced. My interview with the owner, Halli, shares her vision and mission as well as the beauty she creates with each new pattern.

I was incredibly excited to be able to test and incorporate the newest Kindred Wrap, Sage Ballard Stripe, which releases today!! It is the perfect color to match with my blues, neutrals, and greens, with the elegant simplicity of wide spaced stripes to match with just about every outfit. This color… the best way I can describe it is if fairies wove a wrap from the softest silver and sweetest sage leaves in a field just outside of heaven. It’s perfection. I am using a size 6 for the versatility of wraps that can be done and I admit, no matter the carrier, my favorite carry is always on my hip. I love the kissable distance I have to Ronin’s head, the comfort and ease of having free hands, and the ability to shoulder carry my tote/purse.

I’m not the only one who loves this wrap. As I write, Ronin is sound asleep, nestled in it’s woven embrace. The weight and gentle fabric rest easily on his skin, keeping him cool in the heat. When we’re not using it, you can bet it’s on his bed or in his teepee, awaiting another book reading binge that requires it’s presence.

As the summer turns to fall, I’ll be sharing more ways to wrap and outfits that can be worn with my darling Sage. For those of you who don’t wrap yet, don’t fret! I know wrapping can seem intimidating and downright hard, but let me tell you, it’s not. I practiced wrapping a teddy bear before I even tried to put Ronin in – practicing on a squirmy toddler is not the most accomplished feeling. I got the motions down, figured out just how I was most comfortable, and then slowly introduced it to my little guy. Don’t worry if your rails are tight on your first try, don’t freak out if you feel like you need a second person there as support. Take your time. Make it enjoyable! Wrapping is an amazing way to babywear and Kindred Wrap is a great company to start with.

Ronin Turns 2 + Despicable Me Party

The moment came when our sweet little boy turned two. The moment when I realized he’s no longer a ball of squish, a sweet bundle who loves cuddles with me day and night.

While I reminisce on times before he could say, “No,” a party must be planned. We opted for a smaller family affair, complete with pizza, cake and of course, Despicable Me. I love crafting and making absolutely everything, but this year I opted for a few store bought goodies to make life a tad simpler. Blue and yellow plates, Despicable Me tablecloth, napkins, and balloons, and a few Pringle cans disguised as Minions.

A lover of goodie bags, I had to tone back my usual extravagance and instead gifted guests with party poppers (adult supervised of course) and single packs of Neat Cheeks wipes. The poppers cost $1 a piece and we’re incredibly entertaining. The wipes were a great way for each kiddo to grab and wipe their cake covered faces and fingers. If you’ve never used Neat Cheeks, give ’em a try! They’re lightly flavored with Stevia, a 0 calorie sweeter that makes getting your image

le one’s face cleaned on the go a breeze.

The night was wonderful, full of Despicable Me (1+2), Nerf wars and tons of edible goodness! Let’s just say our house is now stocked full of Nerf guns and darts, Minions, and toy cars to boot.
